Student facilities
There‘s a number of different facilities at our campus to make your stay with us at Westphalian Uiversity even more comfortable.
Besides from the seating accomodations in the hallways, which all have sockets to plug in any electronic device, there‘s the library to study in a peaceful and quite enviroment. As student you can visit the library any time during the long opening hours. At the two-stories library filled with books for every course, magazines and daily newspapers, you have the possibility to use the copier and the computers.
To take a break and gain some energy you can visit the food court with a daily changed and cheap but tasty menu. Take a seat at the café right next to the food court to have a quick snack or a coffee. You‘re in a rush? In that case you can use of of the vending machines in the hallway to get a hot or cold beverage and some snacks! You can use your student ID to pay for everything.
Other facilities include the ASTA shop, where you can buy stationary and merch of the WH, the gym and many different consultation offices.
About Gelsenkirchen and its freetime activities
Gelsenkirchen is known all over Germany for their football club „FC Schalke04“. Sports, and especially football, are very important in this town. That‘s why one of the biggest sightseeing spots ist the Veltins-Arena which doesn‘t only host football games, but also other sport events and festivals like ‚Rock im Pott‘ and concerts.
Also known for the stunning coal-mining past, Gelsenkirchen has many places to learn about the towns history. You can visit interactive museums like the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Zeche Zollverein", the „Bergbaumuseum Rotthausen“ and „Das kleine Museum“ at the colliery Hugo.
If you‘re looking for something to do with friends, there‘s always an option accessible within a few minutes of tram ride:
- visit the Zoo „ZOOM Erlebniswelt“
- go bowling at „Firebowl“, the biggest bowling place in our federal state NRW
- visit the „Alma-Park“ where you can choose between many activities like paintball, lasertag, escape rooms, bubbleball and many more.
After all these activities you might want to relax. Gelsenkirchen has a lot of nature. Take a walk or have a picnic at one of the many parks like the „Nordsternpark“ or the „Stadtgarten“.
Besides, there are many cozy pubs and bars in the city. Your student tutors will show you the most interesting places to hang out!!!
Discover the "Ruhrgebiet" and NRW!
Gelsenkirchen is part of the „Ruhrgebiet“ and surrounded by many other interesting towns like Bochum, Essen and Dortmund.
Even bigger cities such as Aachen and Münster, as well as vibrant metropoles such as Düsseldorf and Cologne are just one train ride away. The Netherlands can be reached within less than two hours. With your semesterticket you can take any public transportation ride for free in NRW.
A spontaneous trip to another place is easy, very comfortable and exciting!
ASTA Events
The ASTA (The General Student Committee) also regularly organizes events and parties for students. Trips by bus or plane to major European cities such as Barcelona, Prague or Amsterdam are offered. And due to the fact that there is always a reason to celebrate, students organize pub crawls and barbecues throughout the year.
