Bachelor´s of Business Informatics
More and more business processes are supported by information systems. Already today, Information became the most important raw material of the 21st century. Companies are developing new potentials to design digital business models and -processes.
Digitalization requires competences that go beyond informatics and encompass business processes and operational concepts. Within our degree program, these required competences are taught in theory and practice and will open up great job opportunities in a broad field of applications.
Business information systems cover an interdisciplinary field of business administration, economics and computer sciences, making business information systems an application-oriented field of computer sciences. Students of this program acquire competences from all subject areas. They understand information technologies and its fundamentals as well as business management objectives, strategies, functions and processes. Our focus in Gelsenkirchen is based on Informatics.
Structure and Content of the Study Program
The first half of the program offers a comprehensive and practice-oriented education of fundamentals. In particular, the following subjects are offered:
- Theory of computer sciences
- Object-oriented programming
- Technical and mathematical basics
- Software technology and database systems
- Human-Computer Interaction
- IT & Project Management
- Business English
In addition to these fundamentals in Informatics, the first three semesters also provide a base for specialization in business information systems: An introduction to business administration, the basics of information systems, production and also Management already supports the application-oriented studies here.
Study focus
A comprehensive specialization is given within the second half of the program. This involves acquiring competences within the following subject areas:
- Management and Accounting
- Supply Chain Management and Digitalization
- Business Process Management
- Digital Marketing
- IT Law
The specialization offers interdisciplinary competences in the form of two elective modules. As an example, the elective modules can be completed in the field of internet security and others. Possible electives can be found in the module handbook.
Software project: A full-year software project (semesters four and five) supports the practice-oriented program studies. In the software project, a practice-oriented software development is carried out in a team. From analysis and planning to realization and documentation, all steps are implemented independently. Experience: A three-month practical phase in the 6th semester offers the opportunity to apply what has been learned in a company environment and to make initial contacts in companies and with future employers.
Thesis: At the end of the program, the Bachelor's thesis is written. This thesis can also be written in cooperation with a company. The bachelor's thesis is presented at the end and defended in a colloquium.
Bachelor’s degreee: The academic degree "Bachelor of Science" has been achieved.

Master’s degree programs
We offer a master's degree in business informatics that follows the bachelor’s degree. In this program, the existing analytical, methodical and technological competences are further developed. Theoretically sound solutions to problems are developed independently and implemented in a team-oriented, systematic and structured manner.
