Bachelor´s of Data Science

In the Data Science program, you will gain solid knowledge in the engineering of self-optimizing systems. The program includes modules on algorithmic fundamentals, software realization and software design. A strong application orientation is achieved through project-oriented work.

The Data Science program qualifies you for engineering work in the field of intelligent and information technology applications. You will learn the professional design and creation of such software as well as its support throughout the entire software life cycle. The knowledge imparted in this degree program comes primarily from computer science and mathematics or statistics. In addition, you choose between an economic and a technical application area.

As a graduate, you will be able to decide for an engineering or economic problem whether machine learning methods should be used advantageously. You can model the problem, define influencing variables and also develop and implement the appropriate data and software structure.

 

Structure and Content of the Study Program

In addition to the obligatory mathematical, informatics and Data Science or Machine Learning basics, students choose between a business and a technical focus from the first semester onwards and take part in both the required basic modules and the in-depth modules. Here, we provide a basic understanding of the processes whose flow is ultimately to be optimized.

The first semester also includes the Students' Lab module, in which students work on interesting projects in small projects together with students from higher semesters.

Other elective modules for specialization in an application field or for deepening individual competencies come, in addition to the area of Data Science/Machine Learning, from the areas of Business Informatics, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.

In the main study program, about one third of the courses are project-related. In many cases - in cooperation with companies from the region - practice-relevant tasks are worked on in the subject area of the respective module. In particular, the advanced Machine Learning/Data Science courses in the 4th and 5th semesters are planned as project work. Complemented by social and personal skills, you will know how to work independently with experts, communicate your ideas and adequately contribute your achievements to projects.

After completing your data science studies, you will be able to decide for engineering or economic problems whether methods of self-optimizing algorithms are advantageous to use. For problems to be mapped, you will be able to develop a model, define influencing variables, create data structures and design and implement a suitable software architecture.

Data Scientists are increasingly sought after in many sectors such as industry and production, banking and insurance, communications companies, utilities and the energy industry, retail and public administration. 

Many new products and services are getting intelligent features from the field of Data Science. For example, smartphones, smart TVs and industrial machines are among them. But they can also be found in processes such as energy generation, goods production or communication with customers and business partners.

Data Science has become a strong driver of innovation in the last 10 years. Prominent examples are the development of self-driving cars and voice-controlled systems such as Amazon's Alexa (or similar products from Apple or Google). But also more hidden systems like facial or fingerprint recognition to unlock electronic devices, translation apps and face retrieval in images, are based on intelligent algorithms of Data Science. The qualified degree in Data Science is a guarantee for excellent opportunities on the job market.
